What is Bowling?

The sport of bowling is a sport that is played with a ball (a bowling ball) that the player has to throw and knock down pins at the end of a lane. However, there is much more to it.

Scoring

Scoring is done by keeping track of how many pins the player can knock down in two throws. Each set of throws is what is referred to as a "frame". The tenth frame of an average game is different because it can have up to three throws depending on how many pins are knocked down on each throw. To make it easier to understand, here is what a typical score sheet could look like.

What a Scoresheet looks like.

Marks

In the above image, you might notice different symbols like "/" and "X". These are referred to as "marks" and each one has a different point value.

An "X" is called a "strike" and that is when a player knocks all the pins down on their first throw of a frame. The tenth frame is an exception because a bowler can get up to three strikes in that frame. A strike is calculated as 10 pins plus the pins in the next two shots.

An "/" is referred to as a ""spare" and a player gets a spare when they don't knock all the pins down on their first shot but gets the remaining pins on the second shot. A spare counts as ten pins plus the amount of pins on their next shock

A Perfect Game

A perfect game is when a player manages to get a total of twelve strikes in a row totaling up to a score of 300 points.
